Akenfield, Ronald Blythe’s classic study of rural Suffolk life was first published back in 1969 and then famously adapted for film by Sir Peter Hall.
Almost forty years later Guardian journalist and playwright Craig Taylor decided to re-visit the East Anglian villages featured in Blythe’s book and talk to the current generation of ‘Akenfield’ residents.
The result was a new publication based on the experiences of 21st century country folk. Now, Taylor has taken these village voices and used them to create a poignant new play for Eastern Angles Theatre Company featuring first-hand accounts of modern rural life - a kaleidoscopic view of the Suffolk countryside in a state of flux, subject to the forces of globalisation, intensive farming and migrant workers.
Directed by Naomi Jones, whose production Flight Path premiered at London’s Bush Theatre last year, this new play, Return to Akenfield, will tour to towns and villages across the East of England during Spring 2009.
This new, two-hour play will be directed by Naomi Jones and designed by Mika Handley.
