NEWS - Dec 2009

The popularity of famous Rougham Estate Christmas trees is growing every year as more and more people opt for the Rougham Estate quality for their festive centrepiece.

Available at Blackthorpe Barn in Rougham until 22nd December, the Christmas trees are freshly cut and come in all shaped and sizes, including a wide range of pot grown trees.

Previous winner of the ‘British Christmas Tree Grower of the Year’ award and having supplied 10 Downing Street on numerous occasions, the Estate has a reputation for quality and longevity.

Each year visitors come from far and wide to choose their ideal festive tree, with a huge choice from award winning Blue Spruces, more traditional Norway Spruces, as well Fraser Firs to Scots Pine and Nordman Firs, all offering different subtle shades of colour and fabulous textures.  Every tree is lovingly nurtured by Rougham Estate staff and carefully prepared ready to transform into the main Christmas focal point in over 6,000 homes.

Tree Characteristics:

Fraser Fir – Named after the Scots botanist John Fraser (1750-1811) who encountered the tree in the Southern Appalachian mountains of the US.  The tree is uniformly pyramid-shaped with dark blue-green needles.

Blue Spruce – A cultivated variety of the Colorado Spruce of the South West US.  Much planted in parks and gardens, as the name suggests the needles are blue.

Norway Spruce – A native of Central and Northern Europe this has a traditional shape with shiny green leaves carried by grey or reddish shoots and a superb fragrance.

Scots Pine – The only pine tree native to the British Isles, it formed forests over much of the country until about 8000 years ago, today they are confined to the Scottish Highlands. The blue-green needles come in pairs that twist together providing a dense shape.

Nordman Fir – Also known as Caucasian Fir and a native in Turkey.  Its popularity is growing because of the soft glossy rich dark green needles that tend to be retained well throughout the festive season.

George comments, “We take so much care of our trees all year round.  They are grown in special plantations on the estate and sold as soon as possible after being lifted from the ground. We like to think our customers look after them as much as we do so offer essential tree tips to every new tree owner.  With the trees available at Blackthorpe Barn, it couldn’t be more convenient with ample parking, plus, with the British Crafts within Blackthorpe Barn, decorations and lighting shop, bar and café, many people turn their visit into a complete day out.”

Blackthorpe Barn is situated in the heart of Suffolk just outside Bury St. Edmunds, it couldn’t be easier to find; just off the A14 at junction 45 (Sat Nav IP30 9JG).
